In Memory Of
Matthew Kechter
February 19, 1983 - April 20,1999
Matthew was shot in the library after he tried to reach friends hiding in adjacent video room. "When I heard he was one of the ones from the library, it only made sense," said sophomore basketball player Greg Barnes. "He was always in the library studying. He always put academics first."
Matthew was 16 years old, and a sophomore. He lifted weights and maintained an "A" gradepoint average. To earn some extra money, he worked at a pizza place. "He was always talking about his family," a friend said. "Matt always waited for his little brother to come home from school by the mailbox out in front of his house. He was just that kind of guy." Matthew was hoping to be a lineman for the Columbine Rebels next fall. Click here to read an article about how the Rebels were honoring Matthew when they won the state finals on December 5, 1999.
